Hint

Post by MSpagni »

I very often use EDpro for directory comparison, and very often I sort the results by directory.
The files present only in the other pane ("added") are not listed in the relevant directory but all appended in random order at the end of the list.
In this case I almost always have to do the comparison twice: once sorting the left panel, the second sorting the other panel.

Could you please add an option to order the second panel too (if not to have it active by default)?

I don't think it's possible (if I understood your question correctly). If you sort one pane, the other pane has to follow in order to match file names.

Well, maybe it's not easy but absolutely not impossible.

Exactly as, when you compare two files, you leave a hole in the left pane for the lines present in the right pane but not in the left one and viceversa, then you can leave a "hole" in the file list at the relevant directory position if the file is present only in the other list. (Of course I mean you leave a hole in a list but the filename in the other at the same position!)

I don't see any compelling reason to not have "holes" in the sorted list.

Perhaps I misunderstood your idea. What you describe here ("holes") is already happening in EDPro. If you mean something different, a screenshot is always helpful.

It's hard to make a screeshot of what's not yet available, so I try to clarify what I mean in this way.
Sorting the left panel by directory:
That's what EDpro does now
That's what EDpro does now
Current.gif (9.35 KiB) Viewed 12084 times
That's what I'd like to have
That's what I'd like to have
Desired.gif (9.27 KiB) Viewed 12084 times
Got the point?

N.B. The best (IMHO) would be if for each directory the files are sorted by name.
The best of the best would be to ba able to specify the secondary key at wish...

Being dreaming and not dreaming in large is niggardly...

if I set
View - Options - Dir comparions - Initial Sorting
to
Both directories, Path, Ascending
I get pretty much what you want ...

Yes indeed!
Both directories: that's the magic spell I missed.

But I must be careful for it's a "fragile" setting: if I reverse the order then EDpro reverts to single sorting.
Not a big problem, once you're aware of.

Thank you very much.

It's not a problem, it's by design: clicking on a column will sort by that column.

Yes, of course.
But that operation takes me out of the "both" mode.
I didn't mean it's a bug, and it's ok indeed.
Simply it's a matter of remembering that... and that's a problem (for me ).
