Support for external drive

Post by sunibo »

I am evaluating ExamDiff and it works superbly with my two PCs and a removable hard drive. However, I also have an Archos A700 multimedia player which attaches to the PC via USB and, when connected, appears to the PC as another hard drive. Although ExamDiff can see and navigate through directories on the Archos, it doesn't create a comparison - and the ExamDiff options aren't showing when the directories are 'right-clicked'. It's as if the drive doesn't exist when the compare button is pressed.
The Archos has a 100gb hard drive, so there is a need for ExamDiff to enable a valid comparison. Am I missing something, or does ExamDiff not support all types of hard drive?

Hmm... I can't reproduce your problem. I regularly compare my Lacie external USB drive against the hard drive, and I just tried comparing iPod as well. All works as expected. BTW, I assume you are talking about ExamDiff Pro, not ExamDiff.

It is the Pro version. If it helps. I've have created a screenshot which shows the program identifying the directory on the Archos. (The image hasn't appeared - what did I do wrong? It's my first attempt at 'posting' messages)

Although ExamDiff Pro sees the directory, it doesn't accept it and go on to so the compare when I press 'OK'.

Any thoughts?

The image didn't make it. You need to upload your image to some web site (such as ImageShack), and then provide a link to it.

So what happens when you press "Compare" in the Compare Dialog?

Ok, try this for the image:

As for pressing 'compare', there's no point, because the (Archos) directory name highlighted (as shown on the piccy) doesn't transfer into the directory area in the Compare dialogue box. This is the case whether I try to put it as the first or second directory for a compare. None of the Archos directories will appear in the Compare dialogue area after being highlighted and selected in the 'Browse for folder' dialogue box. ExamDiff Pro sees the directories but doesn't accept them into the program....!

I'm not sure why you can't select a folder but try mapping your external drive to a letter, such as J. Currently it shows as AV700 instead of a lettered drive.

The Archos doesn't show on the list of drives in Computer Manager, so I can't change it to a drive letter. Also, I can't map to it as a network drive, as it is USB connected, showing under 'Portable Devices' in Computer. Do you know of any other way I can change how it appears to the PC, other than as AV700?

I think something is wrong with the way your Archos drive is set up. Perhaps this topic will help: http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.p ... 40742332e2 . If not, try searching the web for the way to get a drive letter for your external device.
