Re: BUG: ExamDiff improperly comparing shortcut (.lnk) files causes slowness

You are probably right. In any case, that's up to IShellLink, we can't control its behavior.

Re: BUG: ExamDiff improperly comparing shortcut (.lnk) files causes slowness

Thanks for letting me know. Bottom line, EDP uses the IShellLink interface for link resolution, and it would use all link properties, including environment variables. The problem in your case that they were pointing to a non-existent directory, hence the delay.

Re: BUG: ExamDiff improperly comparing shortcut (.lnk) files causes slowness

I was just writing my correction. You are right, EDP also always resolves link targets, whether or not the Target column is visible. We'll have to take another look at this, see if we can delay link resolution.

Re: BUG: ExamDiff improperly comparing shortcut (.lnk) files causes slowness

I then noticed that when ExamDiff compares .lnk files (shortcuts in windows), it is trying to compare the target and start folder of the shortcut rather than the shortcut itself. That alone is a problem as well as the fact that it doesn't bother to expand the environment variable.

EDP does not ...

It depends how many problems are reported by the users but typically 1-2 months.

Re: Beyond Compare features I'd like to have in EDPro

A few years ago you wrote:

I tried BC4, and it ...

Re: Problems of offset

We'll have the fix for different status panes for byte-by-byte mode in the next builds of 15 and 16. The problem was not directly caused by the mode but by what the first byte was, and that changed because of the mode switch.

We'll also make the selection pane smaller.

Maybe. I just tried in Windows XP, 32-bit, and I can't reproduce your results.

Re: Problems of offset

That "in between" state, does it persist if you recompare? What about restarting EDP? Yes, when you recompare files you can see status panes being resized but in the end they should settle down, and this is what I see in both 32- and 64-bit modes.

Re: Problems of offset

Let's first establish this: again, there's no special handling of status bar panes based on the "Use fast byte-by-byte comparison" option.

The screenshot on the right uses fast mode: compare the status bars.

Re: Problems of offset

Sorry, I have to disagree with these.

As a partial fix I can suggest removing the leading zeros (see below) and dynamically resize the status bar panes in a more effective way.
0x... format is a way to show hex numbers (unless I misunderstood). Dynamically resizing status bar panes is already ...

Re: Problems of offset

I'd like to have status bars perfect but I'm afraid I can't see a solution here, when there's not enough room for all panes. If we make the selection pane smaller, there will someone complaining that they can't see its value.

Re: Problems of offset

Why are the status bars different?
I'm not seeing it on my PC. What you call ByteByByto, it's the one with "Use fast byte-by-byte comparison" option enabled, right? If so, there are no differences in status bars based on this flag.

What does it mean the '\' in case of binary?
Not sure. Please ...

Re: Problems of offset

Strange, I used even smaller screen and still can see more than your screenshot shows. Anyway, what is your suggestion? How should that status bar panes be sized?
